MATCH REPORT by Jonathan Smedley
Northallerton 3 Linthorpe 2
Northallerton Town Women hosted the unbeaten North Riding Women’s Premier Division league leaders Linthorpe Academicals Women.
A minutes silence was observed in remembrance of the men and women who gave their lives in conflict.
Town having lost the reverse fixture 3-1 back in September wanted to put in a good performance.
A mistake by the Linthorpe GK in the second minute almost gifted Town the lead. 5 minutes later Hannah Bowe forced a great save from a powerful low strike.
Town played some great football, getting the ball down and working as a unit, creating plenty of chances in a first half that ebbed and flowed. It was Linthorpe who broke the deadlock just before the half hour mark, a ball over the top and the left wing afforded too much time and space and beat Caitlin Gunn who had made several great saves to keep the scores level. 0-1 Linthorpe.
Towns response was excellent, straight back at the Linthorpe defence who put in block after block to hold their lead, the two teams went end to end for the remainder of the half, with both keepers and defences making brave saves putting bodies on the line.
Half time and trailing by a goal but had our chances too. The message was clear, keep working, close down quicker and BELIEVE!
A good start again but Town conceded again 12 mins into the half, another ball found its way through and the striker beat the rushing keeper with a shot from the edge of the box. 2 down but not out.
Town rallied again, buoyed by support from the bench, the stands and even the far east via WhatsApp video call.
The intensity increased, defence and midfield linking up with attack seamlessly, a strong tackle by Jess Pattison won the ball to Katie Boynton who linked up well with Hannah Bowe and Ruth Jeal via some once touch passing, resulting in Boynton just firing wide, the tide felt like it was turning.
2 mins later Emily Metcalfe beat two players and laid off to Katie Boynton who chipped a dangerous ball into the box for the onrushing Ruth Jeal, the Linthorpe defender hooked a clearance on the head of Jeal and saw the ball spin into the net, 2-1, game on.
Linthorpe had barely kicked off and were defending for their lives again, within 2 mins Charlotte Lewis recovered the ball from a long ball in her own half, her attempted through ball was initially cut out by the Linthorpe defender but Emily Metcalfe was first to react and laid off for Katie Boynton who pinged a worldie from 25 yards into the top corner, 2-2, this isn’t done yet.
3 mins later Town completed one of the best comebacks you’ll see this season, more success down the right hand side, Metcalfe sending a clever chip down the line to Bowe who drove into the box and fired a cross into Boynton who took a touch and buried her brace and the match winner. 3-2 take a bow Ladies!
Every player ran her legs off, the support play was outstanding, the press was superb, the comeback was sublime!
A well deserved victory to conquer the unbeaten league leaders.
Every player was a contender for Managers player this week. After much deliberation over the performance of all players the honours are shared between Caitlin Gunn for her bravery and cat like reflexes that kept us in it and the attacking prowess of Katie Boynton who not bagged the winner and an assist but a contender for goal of the season with the equaliser, well done to both!
